Ocean trash to treasure

Most young people around the Coco Beach area near Dar Es Salaam face different social problems. With limited skill and education, it is difficult to earn an income, some have no other option but prostitution, drug abuse and thus face illness.

Africraft NGO trains the youth on entrepreneurship and up-cycling trash with the trash they collect from the ocean.

Coco beach waste management centre was started in 2018 as a centre to host World Clean-up Day in collaboration with Nipe Fagio, Femina Hip and with the support of the Swedish embassy.

Every year, about 8 million tons of plastic waste escapes into the oceans from coastal nations. That’s the equivalent of setting five garbage bags full of trash on every foot of coastline around the world. Plastics often contain additives making them stronger, more flexible, and durable. But many of these additives can extend the life of products if they become litter, with some estimates ranging to at least 400 years to break down.
