Coco Beach Waste Management Center

Coco beach waste management center (Ocean trash to treasure)

Coco beach waste management centre serves as an information point through art installations that reflect the human impact of waste. Coco beach waste management centre are started in 2018 as a centre to host World Clean-up Day in collaboration with Nipe Fagio, Femina Hip and with the support of the Swedish embassy.

Coco beach waste management centre goal is to empower vulnerable youth to access alternative livelihoods and generate an income through recycling. Africraft NGO provides training to youth on crafts making, entrepreneurship and up-cycling trash with the trash they collect from the ocean. Most young people around this area face different social problems. With limited skill and education, it is difficult to earn a livelihood and in turn, some face no other option but prostitution, drug abuse and illness.

Yearly, up to 12.7 million tonnes of plastic enters our oceans. It escapes from landfill sites, floats down our drains, ends up in rivers and makes its way into our oceans. A lot of plastic waste is invisible to the naked eye, it collects in ocean gyres, where marine life feeds. It’s not only the single-use plastic, such as plastic bottles and straws you use but the microbeads in your cosmetics, the fibres in your clothing and in your teabags. As only 1% of this plastic floats, everything else sinks to the floor polluting the most remote places on earth. At the rate we’re still using plastic, the problem is set to increase tenfold. The impact this has on the ecosystem, marine life and humans are potentially irreversible.

Our Environment

Trash Blindness

Poor waste managment effects

Every year, about 8 million tons of plastic waste escapes into the oceans from coastal nations. That’s the equivalent of setting five garbage bags full of trash on every foot of coastline around the world. Plastics often contain additives making them stronger, more flexible, and durable. But many of these additives can extend the life of products if they become litter, with some estimates ranging to at least 400 years to break down.

Our Ocean

What are we addressing? The Indian Ocean in Tanzania is massively polluted with trash originating from human beings. Poor waste management and disposal have an adverse effect on our environment.
