Glass Bottle Bank Tanzania

Building a Circular Economy for Glass Waste

The Glass Bottle Bank (GBB) is AfriCraft’s flagship circular economy initiative designed to transform the way glass waste is managed in Tanzania. Through community-based collection, recovery, recycling, and upcycling systems, the project creates environmental, social, and economic value while reducing the amount of glass waste reaching dumpsites, beaches, streets, and other public spaces.

Why Glass Bottle Bank?

Policy Engagement and System Change

The Glass Bottle Bank is more than a recycling project—it is a platform for advancing sustainable waste management policies and practices in Tanzania.

In Dodoma, the project works closely with municipal authorities and the Vice President’s Office to strengthen collaboration on waste management solutions and support the implementation of circular economy approaches. Memoranda of Understanding have been established to guide cooperation and ensure long-term sustainability.

How It Works

Our Impact

Tons of glass bottles collected
0
Glass tons recovered monthly

Promoting waste segregation and responsible disposal practices.
Supporting waste collectors, recyclers, and community-based environmental enterprises.
Reducing greenhouse gas emissions through increased recycling and resource recovery.

AfriCraft envisions a Tanzania where glass waste is recognized as a valuable resource rather than a burden. Through the Glass Bottle Bank, we are creating cleaner communities, green jobs, stronger recycling systems, and a more sustainable future for generations to come.

Partnerships for Impact

The success of the Glass Bottle Bank relies on strong partnerships with local governments, community groups, private sector actors, and recycling companies.

A key strategic partner is KIOO Limited, Tanzania’s leading glass manufacturer, which receives recovered glass materials for recycling and reintroduction into the production cycle. This partnership strengthens local recycling capacity while reducing dependence on virgin raw materials.
